CCDC 2010 End of Year Appeal

Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition

Dear CCDC Members, Friends and Allies:

Wow—what a year this has been! July 2010 marked twenty years of both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and of the Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition (CCDC)! When CCDC was first founded, the concept of people with different types of disabilities coming together to form a disability rights organization was a radical experiment. Over the past 20 years we have celebrated many successes in the disability community but we still face new challenges ahead.

We are proud that CCDC has built a legislative advocacy program creating good laws such as consumer directed attendant support service (CDASS), successfully fighting horrible system decisions such as cuts to the Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND) program and amending many laws, such as ensuring helmet restrictions were not applied to children using manual wheelchairs. We created an individual advocacy program helping hundreds of individuals with disabilities each year obtain necessary benefits, including Collin, a teenager with autism who is in danger of losing his Medicaid because the state is determining he has a “behavior” problem not a medical need. In our CCDC statewide groups, organizing in local communities has resulted in positive changes including the Pueblo library enhancing assistive technology and the city of Sterling creating more curb cuts. Our CCDC Legal program continues to enforce basic accessibility, fair housing, and due process. We are in litigation with Medicaid as they failed to provide advance notice to clients before cutting services and the City of Denver for failing to provide effective communication to inmates in jail who are Deaf. Our CCDC Center for the Rights of Parents with Disabilities (CRPD) has kept many families together through disability friendly legal representation.

CCDC has important plans for 2011 including several trials, implementing new Medicaid programs, expanding CDASS and other care options, preventing budget cuts as well as expansion of our board and promotion of our unique training and consulting on new ADA regulations. We are accountable to you, our members and are not beholden to any one interest or funding source.

As a non-profit organization, we must raise all of our funds and need your help! Please consider making a year-end donation to CCDC on December 8, 2010. We are participating in Colorado Gives Day and donations made through our Giving First link http://www.givingfirst.org/CCDC on this day, will be increased by a philanthropic incentive fund! If you do not wish to make your donation online, will gladly accept your check, please write “Gives Day” in the memo. CCDC operates on a shoestring budget and we value and are grateful for the commitment of our network of trained, dedicated volunteers and advocates. We look forward to a New Year ahead and thank you in advance for your support!

Cheers! from Julie Reiskin on behalf of CCDC Staff and Joe Beaver of the CCDC Board.
