This page provides a summary of the education and training provided by CCDC’s Legal Program regarding compliance with the laws that we use to secure equal rights for people with disabilities.

 

Disability Awareness: A tool kit for Housing Professionals

Summary

Through a contract between CCDC and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Division of Housing (DOH), Andrew Montoya was the presenter at the Division of Housing’s (DOH) “Disability Awareness: A tool kit for Housing Professionals”  training series. The training series consisted of four trainings occurring across Colorado.  Participants of the training included housing authority staff, property managers, and all DOH contract recipients. These trainings primarily consisted of two courses:

1.       Reasonable Accommodations 101-designed to educate the participants on reasonable accommodations and the Fair Housing Act;  and

2.      Disability Awareness 101- designed to address symptoms, behaviors, effective communication etc. for different types of disability.

The Life College Program at Atlantis Community

Summary

Andrew Montoya participated as a presenter at the Life College Program at Atlantis Community.  The program consisted of students between the ages of 17 and 22 with a variety of disabilities. One commonality between all the students was some form of cognitive disability. The program focused on having the students interact with one another in order to promote daily problem solving skills. Andrew presented a history of civil rights and introduced the students to basic skills in advocating for themselves as individuals with disabilities.

Colorado Association of the Deaf: Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Summary

Kevin Williams presented as a guest speaker at the Colorado Association of the Deaf’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon. Kevin spoke about CCDC’s efforts to ensure compliance with the ADA and securing equal rights for individuals who are deaf and their interactions with different law enforcement agencies.

ARC of Colorado: A Colorado Conference on Balancing the Scales of Justice for Children and Adults with Disabilities Conference

Summary

Kevin Williams, Andrew Montoya and co-presenters Amy Robertson, J.D. and Tim Fox, J.D. presented at the conference on the topic of “Legal Ethics When Working with Clients with Disabilities”, with Julie Reiskin M.S.W. as Moderator.
